Good Guests Are Always Welcome.  Sail through the spring and summer party season with these tips for being a good guest and showing up with that special something!

When it’s your turn to be the guest, the most important thing you can do to show your appreciation is to be fully present to enjoy the gifts your host has bestowed upon you. In addition to bringing a smile and good attitude, an excellent way to express your gratitude is to bring your host a gift. Wine is a tried and true hostess gift, made even more special with a personalized touch. The gesture is a thoughtful one that shows you are grateful for the invitation.

Benjamin Franklin said it best, “Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance.”

If you’ve been invited to a party at a friend, colleague or the boss’ home, it can be stressful selecting and presenting wine as a gift. To make the task less daunting we are happy to share some tips and a few special tricks with you.

Tips For Gifting Wine:

  1. Always remember that giving wine is a gift from you to your host. Therefore, select a wine your host will enjoy and don’t worry about pairing it with your host’s menu. Your host may decide to share the bottle during the party, but do not be offended if they do not. They may want to enjoy the wine quietly after the party or at a later date. Or, they may have a special selection they’ve paired with the menu already chilling or decanted.
  2. Gifting one bottle is just right, but gifting a pair of red and white can be memorable.
  3. Consider the host’s preferences when selecting the wine. If you already know what they enjoy, you have a great start. If you don’t, no worries – bring one of your favorite bottles – it’s like introducing two people you like to one another, hoping they will like each other too.
  4. Know the story behind the bottle you gift, or gift a bottle with a story that will have meaning to your host. Select wine from somewhere your hosts have traveled or you have recently visited. The connection between a place or memory and the wine makes the gift more meaningful. This summer is a perfect time to gift a bottle of J. Lohr Wine. We love the American success story behind every bottle and connect with the spirit of Jerry Lohr, an All-American family man and wine pioneer. Raised on a South Dakota farm, Jerry’s agricultural roots armed him with an innate sense for the intricacies of climate, soil quality and location. It led him to take a gamble on the gorgeous Central Coast of California and become one of the first to realize the vast, untapped potential of this now-acclaimed wine region. Over the past 4 decades, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has grown to become one of America’s most renowned wineries. However, it remains true to its founder, who hand tended the vines, and it is still run to this day as family business.
  5. Don’t let the price tag dictate your gift. Gift what you love and enjoy.
  6. Be prepared to make a food pairing suggestion for the bottle of wine you gift if asked by your host. For example, the 2014 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay pairs well with Sicilian Chicken with Roasted Lemons, Capers and Olives, Moules Marinières or a simple Thomas Keller Roast Chicken.
  7. Presentation is key. Give your gift a special touch by dressing your wine for the party. Here are four festive DIY ideas for a summer party.

Four Fabulous DIY Wine Bottle Décor Ideas

1. Summer Nosegay (Garden Party / Summer Dinner Party) – This small bouquet of flowers decoratively wrapped combines two of our favorite hostess gifts, flowers and wine.

  • 2014 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay
  • 21″ x “21 square of decorative mesh “Deco Mesh” (wired netted ribbon)
  • 8-9 garden roses (smaller than regular roses)
  • Decorative twine

  1. Make a small slice in middle of your decorative mesh to allow you to slip it over the neck of the wine bottle.
  2. Remove all leaves from the garden roses except for the very top layer.
  3. Gather the garden roses into a tight bouquet and cut the stems on the rose bouquet to approximately 9″. Tie tightly with twine just below the neck of the bouquet.
  4. Slip the neck of the bottle through the slit in the decorative mesh and arrange bouquet so it runs alongside of neck of the wine bottle. Hold in place with one hand while you gather up the decorative mesh around bouquet. Fold the corners backward to where you are holding bouquet to create small “poufs” and wrap the twine around neck of bottle, bouquet and mesh securing it. Tie securely with a knot and finish with a small bow.

tassle bottle

2. Tassel Time (Ladies Night, Cocktail Party, Birthday) – Tassel jewelry is on trend this summer and we love combining our love for fashion and wine…Again, this DIY bottle is a two in one gift as you dress the bottle with tassel bracelets that the host can wear all summer.

  • 2014 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay
  • Tassel Bracelets (make sure the bracelets are on an elastic cord)

Simply slip the bracelets over the neck of the bottle and arrange decoratively.

3. Patriotic Proud (Summer Olympic Viewing Party, Patriotic Parties and BBQ’s) – This summer, in addition to the annual summer patriotic celebrations, let your patriotic spirit shine in support of our USA teams competing in the Summer Olympics. Although political discussions are usually not high on a host’s list for party chat, it’s almost unavoidable this summer with the upcoming Presidential Election, so regardless of which side of the aisle you stand, simply share the Red, White and Blue.

  • 2014 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay
  • 11” length of red, white and blue grosgrain ribbon
  • Round gold monogram sticker or a gold sticker seal

Make a slanted cut on each end of the ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the neck of the bottle, securing it in place with sticker seal.

pool life preservers

4. Summer Fun (Pool, Lake, Beach Party) – Combining our love of the water and wine, we got playful with our Summer Fun bottle. Adorned with miniature life preservers, this gift speaks to the fun nature of a summer party by the water.

  • 2014 J. Lohr Estates Riverstone Chardonnay
  • 2 – 10” lengths of twine
  • 2 – miniature craft “lifesavers”

  1. Insert twine through opening in lifesaver and tie with a knot. Repeat process with other lifesaver.
  2. Place lifesavers 1 ½” away from one another, arrange twine in intersecting pattern, tie bottom string to top string on both sides.
  3. Tie bottom ends from twine around neck of bottle, followed by top strings.

See what unfolds when this eager young professional is invited to the boss lady’s house for the first time.

WINEMAKER’S COMMENTS: The 2014 Riverstone Chardonnay has a youthful, brassy yellow color of medium depth. The aromas are fresh and reminiscent of ripe nectarine, apple and strawberry combined with honey, grilled hazelnuts and toasty oak from the barrel fermentation and sur lie aging. The palate weight is plump and rich, with flavors echoing the aromas with a delicate balance of acidity, buttery length and sophisticated elegance. —Jeff Meier, winemaker

WINE LIST DESCRIPTION: A fresh, youthful and rich Chardonnay with flavors of nectarine, apple, citrus and honey.
