Today is Pancake Tueasday, or Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday. No matter what you call it, it’s the last day before lent and in most parts of the world it’s a day for celebration. One simple and special way to do this is to serve pancakes for dinner. My boys LOVE this and it’s so much easier (and less expensive) than most dinners I make and serve. To add substance to the meal, tonight I am serving it with bacon and fruit salad. A satisfying and relatively healthy dinner. Make it a celebration by setting out a variety of toppings and let the family have fun with it!
Why pancakes on Tuesday?
“The reason that pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent is that the 40 days of Lent form a period of liturgical fasting, during which only the plainest foodstuffs may be eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar are disposed of immediately prior to the commencement of the fast. Pancakes and doughnuts were therefore an efficient way of using up these perishable goods, besides providing a minor celebratory feast prior to the fast itself.”
