“Life is a bowl of cherries” – so let’s enjoy them!
Recently, my Aunt Fran shared a few gorgeous photos of my cousin’s cherry tree on facebook. Cousin David lives in Northern California and is passionate about growing organic food on his family’s land. I was so inspired by these photos, I wanted to share some tips from David and some recipes featuring fresh cherries from a few of my favorite food bloggers! I hope you enjoy.
Tips from David
- Feed your cherry tree a high grade compost (chicken manure, high nitrogen compost, trace minerals, worm castings, oyster shell flour, sea kelp, bone meal). All these ingredients will boost yield and flavor.
- Keep weeds at bay at base of tree just by sheet mulching with card board. That will help to bring worms to the surface and everything will benefit from the worms.
- Give your tree an annual spray of an anti fungal. I would recommend cold pressed neem oil with a little dish soap to help spread it across the leaves.
- Keep the blue jays at bay, hang things from the tree or cover with netting.
. . . and please enjoy these recipes with the cherries from your tree or from your local farm market
