Super Bowl Treats!

by Dawn on February 3, 2010

The Super Treats pictured above were created and inspired by Elizabeth’s daughter, Alexandra Mascali. Big shout out to Ally for some fantastic work!

One of our 5 Tips for Saving on your Super Bowl Party is:  Stick to basics for dessert and save. Avoid buying overpriced cookies and cakes decorated for the Super Bowl at your supermarket. Instead bake your own classic desserts like brownies, cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies – they are always crowd pleasers. Jello is also a very inexpensive, but fun dessert. Serve it up layered with whipped cream and fruit or make Jigglers for the kids.

Here’s the “How-To” for some really Super Cupcakes and Brownies.

Football Cupcakes: Bake cupcakes and allow to cool thoroughly. (We used Red Velvet to make our cupcakes even more special). Separate cupcakes into 2 groups.

1. Superbowl Team-Inspired Cupcakes: Count out the number of letters in each Superbowl team’s name (SAINTS 6 & COLTS 5) – set aside 11 cupcakes to decorate with team colors and letters to spell out each name. Frost 6 cupcakes with black icing and 5 with blue, then pipe with white frosting the letters on each team’s name on the cupcakes so when you place them in a row they spell out the team’s name. FYI – put white frosting in a ziploc bag and snip just the tip off one corner of the bag – viola, pastry decorating bag.

2. Turf/Football-Inspired Cupcakes: Using remaining cupcakes, pipe white icing into blades of grass (again I used same ziploc bag of white icing). Make a dot on center of cupcake, extending finish of frosting (this is what replicates a blade of grass). Continue this pattern over entire top of cupcake. Then spray with green frosting spray. Let set for a 5-10 minutes. Using dark chocolate fudge frosting, pipe a football shape in center of each cupcake, fill in with same frosting. Using the white frosting, pipe on laces.

Fudge Brownie Footballs:
Bake a tray of brownies. Allow to cool thoroughly. Cut tray into quarters and remove entire piece, section by section from pan. Use a drinking/juice glass, depending on size you want, place mouth of glass over brownie. Position glass so side and top are just at edge of section, press one side of the glass to cut the top of your football. Flip your piece and repeat on opposite side of brownie, creating your brownie football shape.  Decorate by piping laces with white frosting. Repeat with remaining section of brownie.

We used a 2-sided whiteboard/chalkboard as a tray and displayed the opposing teams head to head.

Your so clever! Now the gut’s can pick up their own cup cake and the hostess doesn’t have to cut and serve.
(Not that I would have) he he he!
