Mango Madness

When most people think of Mexican Holidays they think of Cinco De Mayo. However, my friends from Mexico tell me that Cinco de Mayo is more popular here in the States than in Mexico and has turned into a “cervaza drinking holiday” due to promotions by US beer and liquor companies.

They also tell me that May 1st, is a much more widely celebrated holiday in Mexico than May 5th. It is Día del Trabajo or Mexico’s Labour Day which commemorates the Haymarket Riot of 1886.

Here is a great idea for enjoying an authentic Mexican treat over the next few days whether it’s Cinco De Mayo or Día del Trabajo.

Mango Skewers
This is a twist on an authentic Mexican treat you will see sold in the streets in Mexico. In Mexico, street vendors cut Mangoes into beautiful flowers and put them on a sticks – I found this cumbersome especially if you don’t use the right variety of Mango. But give it a try I found a picture above to give a good visual. Just as delicious and much simpler is to cut wedges and skewer them on a stick like a kabob. Make up a bunch and put them out with fresh lime juice, chili powder and course salt. Try the Mango sprinkled with these condiments – the combination of sweet, salty and spicy is truly a Mexican delight!
