The Transitional Tabletop

Summer is half over and if you planned to, but haven’t purchased new tableware for the season yet, you are probably thinking it’s too late. It’s not, but you should select colors and patterns that will work well, well into fall. The bonus is there are lots of sales this time of year.

Here are a few rules to take your table from June to October.

1. Steer clear of tropical patterns and bright primary colors.
2. Green is a good transition color.
3. Kelly green is out, but hues like lime or asparagus work well in both seasons

I put together the design board above, with tableware and linens from Crate and Barrel, to illustrate pieces that would make a terrific transitional table. Some are available on the Crate and Barrel website and others in stores only. The pieces are affordable and look great. With them, you can create an entirely different mood by switching out a few items and adding in others. For summer use a bowl of limes and green orchids as a centerpiece for your table. When fall arrives, keep your dishes but swap the limes and flowers for green pillar candles in varying heights and a bowl of green apples. When you have the right basics, small changes can feel big!

  1. I think my favorite color combination is blue, green and brown together. These picks are beautiful! And it makes me a bit excited for fall and an escape from the triple digit Texas summer.
