When you’re getting the kids ready for school in the morning, do you ever feel like that guy from the old Dunkin‘ Donuts‘ commercial? “Time to pack the lunches” Deciding what to pack everyday can be a real dilemma, especially when you want to include food that 1.) the kids will eat 2.) is healthy and 3.) is simple to make. Well, celebrity chef Bobby Flay and actress/mom Lori Loughlin have teamed up with Hellmann’s® Mayonaise and have some sensational solutions for you! See recipes below.
Plus as part of Sandwich Season, Hellmann’s® is re-launching their Sandwich Swap ‘n’ Share on Facebook® . This virtual version of the beloved school lunch ritual of swapping sandwiches will benefit Share Our Strength®, the leading non-profit organization ending childhood hunger in America. When you visit Hellmann’s® Page on Facebook®, you’ll have the opportunity to create a sandwich on the application and, for every sandwich built, Hellmann’s® will make a donation to Share Our Strength®. What’s more, when you share a sandwich with a friend, an additional donation will be made as part of Hellmann’s® $75,000 commitment to support Share Our Strength®
The dilemma of just what to eat may be a problem for most families, but it’s a dream for others! The folks from Hellmann’s® shared a touching story with us… During one of their events with children, kids were asked to create sandwiches. One of the children at the event, a young boy, wanted to know if he had to put mayonnaise on both pieces of the bread that he had been given for his sandwich. When asked why, he shared with the group that he saves the other piece for his dinner. No child in this country should need to worry about where their next meal is coming from and the story illustrates the need for the work that Share Our Strength® does each day.
Last week, I was lucky enough to attend a kick off event for this campaign (Thanks @JenSinger) Here are three wonderful recipes that I was able to watch Bobby and Lori make and then try. Each took only a few minutes to make and were delicious – seriously not just for the kids! For more recipes and ideas make sure to check out Hellmanns.com>
Here are some other great tips that Bobby Flay shared with us at the event:
- Mayonnaise is a great place to build layers of flavor
- If you’re not chewing your not cooking – taste everything you make
- Use the zest of lemon/lime/orange – it’s free flavor
- Great recipes have flavor and texture, think about both when you cook
- Greens onions go a long way in recipes
- Coated fish or chicken in mayonnaise works great in the broiler but not the grill
- Get your ingredients into the food – you can put in more than you think
- Kids love flavor – let them try the heat and spice, you’ll be surprised what they like
- Cook bacon in the oven
