Can you imagine celebrating summer without ice cream? I can’t, but this summer I have been indulging in ice cream more than I care to say. The kids love it and it has become an after dinner ritual. Our Ice Cream Run (or walk since that is what we usually do to get it) is really a fun way to spend some time together, but I am spending way too much! So in an effort, to save some dollars and my derrière, I came across a report by Health.com. The website is full of great information and news on healthy living and eating as well as diet and weight loss. A panel of judges for the magazine scoured America’s scoop shops for the tastiest (and healthiest) ice creams, yogurts, and sorbets. The criteria were superior taste, stellar nutrition, and countrywide availability. There were five winners and below I have highlighted two of my favorites. To read the report with all winners and the detailed judges comments visit http://living.health.com/2009/07/01/americas-healthiest-frozen-scoops/.
Using the report, I came up with a new plan for my boys and I. I am buying our frozen scoops from the grocery store instead of the ice cream shop. This saves some money, even though my Hagan Dazs selection is definitely more expensive than most in the grocer’s freezer. Since we all need to love our after dinner treat, I had to consider the tastiest and healthiest options too. Hagan Dazs Mango and Cranberry/Blueberry Sorbets are awesome and both the boys and I love them. A scoop of each in a sugar cone (add 40 calories, 0.5 grams fat) makes everyone happy and we can still take a walk together – making our after dinner ritual even healthier!

That blueberry sorbet looks amazing! One of my favorite scoops is at a place in Spring Lake (can’t remember the name) – they had homemade Green Apple sherbert with green and white sprinkles – love that stuff!
Is it Thomas Sweet? Oh and the Scone Pony is amazing too! I love eating my way through Spring Lake!
